Over 1 million people in Australia are affected by depression every year, and each will experience a unique set of causes and symptoms of depression.

The Blackdog Institute identifies 5 types of depression, including major depressive disorder and perinatal depression, with a broad range of symptoms including a persistently low mood, difficulty concentrating, feeling nauseous, and a change in appetite.

But no matter what your particular symptoms are, depression is always tough, which is why it’s so important to seek professional support.

How can a professional help me?

Mental health professionals, like qualified psychologists or counselors, are trained to help you identify possible triggers for depression.

They help you develop a toolbox of strategies and skills to manage the symptoms of your depression, and to assist you in setting and working towards personal goals.

Mental health professionals also provide a supportive space where you can talk openly about your experiences and what you’re feeling.

You’re not alone

Depression is tough, but it can be treated, and seeing a psychologist is one of the most powerful steps you can take towards mental wellbeing.

One in 16 Australians are currently experiencing depression. 6.2% of Australians aged 16 to 85 have experienced depression in the last 12 months which is equivalent to 1.16 million people today.
